PlotSummary

ThisfilmistheclassicstoryofaJoanna,ayoung,charmingandinnocentwoman,whofallsinlovewith,anddecidestomarry,John,awonderfulblackdoctor.Morespecifically,itisthestoryofhowthepeoplearoundthem,includingtheirparents,friendsandothers,reacttothenewsofapossiblemarriagebetweenablackmanandawhitewoman.

Joannahadbeenconvincedthatherparentswouldhavenoproblemwiththesituation,becausetheyhadalwaysraisedhertobelievethatblacksandwhiteswereequal,andthatthatanykindofracialintolerancewasunacceptable.However,whenhermotherlearnsofthemarriageplans,sheisatfirstmoreshockedthanhappy,andwhenherfatherfindsout,hefindshimselfunabletosupportwhathisdaughterwasabouttodo.Soonafter,Mrs.Draytoncomestofullyembracethemarriage,butMr.Draytonmustcomefacetofacewiththefactthathehastroubleacceptinghisownliberalphilosophywhenitisappliedsodramaticallytohisownlife.

Overthecourseoftheday,variousotherpeoplefacethenewswithgreatlyvariedreactions,fromMonsignorRyan,whoisextremelyhappyfortheyoungcouple,toTillie,whoseemsasopposedtotheideaofaninterracialcoupleasthemostconservativewhitepeople.Thatafternoon,John’sparentsflyuptoSanFrancisco,andwhentheydiscoverthatJoannaiswhite,theytoomustfacetheirownfearsandprejudices.Eventuallythough,itisMr.Draytonwhomustemotionallystrugglethemost,andwhomustcometorealizethatatrulyliberalandprogressivepersoncan’topposetheirmarriagesimplybecauseotherpeopleintheworldcouldmaketheirlivesdifficult.
