InstructionsforcompletingtheOrganizationalCultureAssessmentInstrument(OCAI)

ThepurposeoftheOCAIistoassesssixkeydimensionsoforganizationalculture.Incompletingtheinstrument,youwillbeprovidingapictureofhowyourorganizationoperatesandthevaluesthatcharacterizeit.Norightorwronganswersexistforthesequestionsjustasthereisnotrightorwrongculture.Everyorganizationwillmostlikelyproduceadifferentsetofresponses.Therefore,beasaccurateasyoucaninrespondingtothequestionssothatyourresultingculturaldiagnosiswillbeaspreciseaspossible.

Youareaskedtorateyourorganizationinthequestions.Todeterminewhichorganizationtorate,youwillwanttoconsidertheorganizationthatismanagedbyyourboss,thestrategicbusinessunittowhichyoubelong,ortheorganizationalunitinwhichyouareamemberthathasclearlyidentifiableboundaries.Becausetheinstrumentismosthelpfulfordeterminingwaystochangetheculture,you’llwanttofocusontheculturalunitthatisthetargetforchange.Therefore,asyouanswerthequestions,keepinmindtheorganizationthatcanbeaffectedbythechangestrategyyoudevelop.

TheOCAIconsistsofsixquestions.Eachquestionhasfouralternatives.Divide100pointsamongthesefouralternativesdependingontheextenttowhicheachalternativeissimilartoyourownorganization.Giveahighernumberofpointstothealternativethatismostsimilartoyourorganization.Forexample,inquestionone,ifyouthinkalternativeAisverysimilartoyourorganization,alternativeBandCaresomewhatsimilar,andalternativeDishardlysimilaratall,youmightgive55pointstoA,20pointstoBandC,andfivepointstoD.Justbesureyourtotalequals100pointsforeachquestion.

Note,thatthefirstpassthroughthesixquestionsislabeled“Now”.Thisreferstotheculture,asitexiststoday.Afteryoucompletethe“Now”,youwillfindthequestionsrepeatedunderaheadingof“Preferred”.Youranswerstothesequestionsshouldbebasedonhowyouwouldliketheorganizationtolookfiveyearsfromnow.
