Peoplehaveusedpigeonstocarrymessagestooneanotherforhundredsofyears.Infact,pigeonswereacommonwaytosendmessagesrightupthroughWorldWarⅡ.

In1815anEnglishbankernamedNathanRothschildmadehisfortunebyrelyingonmessagessenttohimbycarrierpigeons.EnglishtroopswerefightingNapoleon'sforcesinFrance,andtheEnglishwerebelievedtobelosing.AfinancialpanicgrippedLondon.Governmentbondswereofferedatlowprices.FewpeoplenoticedthatRothschildwassnappingupthesebondswheneveryoneelsewasdesperatelytryingtosellthem.Afewdayslater,Londonlearnedthetruth;theDukeofWellingtonhaddefeatedNapoleonatthebattleofWaterloo.Thevalueofthebondswentup,andRothschildbecameextremelywealthy-allbecausehispigeonshadbroughthimnewsofthevictorybeforeanyoneelseknewofit.

Mostofthetime,however,carrierpigeonswereusedtobenefitanentirecountry,notjustoneindividual.TheUnitedStates,England,France,Germany,andItaly,inbothWorldWarIandWorldWar,usedcarrierpigeons.Notonlywerethebirdsoftenthefastest,mostreliablewaytosendmessages,theycouldalsobeusedtoreachsoldiersfarbehindenemylines,whereradiosandfieldtelephonelineswereuseless.Sincetheycouldeasilybereleasedfromairplanesorships,everybranchofthearmedservicesusedthebirds.InWorldWarⅡ,morethan3,000soldiersand150officerswereneededtocareforandtrainthetensofthousandsofbirdsintheUSPigeonService.

Carryingmessagescouldbeadangerousjob.Somepigeonsperformedwithsuchbraverythattheybecamefamousandwereevenawardedmedals,suchasEngland'sDickenMedalofGallantry.Inafewcases,pigeonsevenbecameprisonersofwar.In1918AmericanforcescapturedapigeonnamedTheKaiser,whichhadbeentrainedtoflyspecialmissionsforGermanyduringbattle.HewastakentoAmerica.Wherehelivedtotheageof32.

ThemostfamouspigeonofallmayhavebeenCherAmi.StationedinFranceduringWorldWarI.hecarriedtwelveimportantmessagesforAmericanforces.Onhislastmission,thoughwounded,hecarriedamessagethatsavedthelivesof194Americansoldiers.Forhisextraordinaryservice,hewasawardedtheFrench”Croixdeguerre”.

Carrierpigeonsareaslightlydifferentbreedfromthekindofpigeonyouseeoncitystreets.Theyatemuchthinnerandtaller,withlongerlegs.Manypeoplefindcarrierpigeonsuglybecauseoftheirbigwattle,aknobbybuildupofskinonthebeat;however,peoplewhoraisepigeonsoftenenjoythisoddappearanceandconsidercarriersthebestoftheirbreeds.
