Themenhavelunchattwelve.Lunchlastsanhourandthenthemengobacktoworkagain.Dinnerisatsix.Cokeusuallygoestotheprisonlibraryafterdinnerandreadsuntil9.30.Thelightsgooutatten.Thedayislong,hard,andboringandeverymanhasalotoftimetothink.Theyusuallythinkaboutwhytheyarethere.Cokedoes.Healwaysthinksabouttwomen.
OneofthemeniscalledEricMasters.Heusedtobeanarmyofficer,justlikeCoke.CokeknowsthatMastershasalotofmoneynow.Thesecondman'snameisHugo.ThatisallCokeknowsabouthim.MastersknowswhereandwhoHugois,butCokedoesn't.
EverynightCokeliesinbedandthinksaboutEricMastersandHugo.Thereisanotherthinghethinksabout,too.Escaping.

Itissixo'clockonaverycoldwinterevening.AlloverEnglandpeoplearesittingdownintheirliving-roomsandarewatchingthenewsontelevisionorarelisteningtoitontheradio.Thereisoneveryimportantpieceofnewsthisevening.Itisthis:
