FishEarsTellFishTales

Fishhaveears.Really.They'requitesmallandhavenoopeningtotheoutsideworld,carryingsoundthroughthebody.Forthepastsevenyears,SimonThorrold,auniversityprofessor,hasbeenexaminingfishears,smallroundearbonescalledotoliths.

TheteamfoundthatEGCGincreasestheproductionofneuralprogenitorcells(神经祖细胞),whichcanadapt,ordifferentiate,intovarioustypesofcells.Theteamthenusedlaboratorymicetodiscoverifthisincreasedcellproductiongaveanadvantagetomemoryorspatiallearning.“Werantestsontwogroupsofmice,onewhichhaddrunkEGCGandacontrolgroup,”saidBai.“Firstthemiceweretrainedforthreedaystofindavisibleplatformintheirmaze(迷宫).Thentheyweretrainedforsevendaystofindahiddenplatform.”

TheteamfoundthattheEGCGtreatedmicerequiredlesstimetofindthehiddenplatform.OveralltheresultsshowedthatEGCGpromoteslearningandmemorybyimprovingobjectrecognitionandspatialmemory.“WehaveshownthattheorganicchemicalEGCGactsdirectlyto
