Therearesofarover170Basqueorganizationsin24countries,withagreaterpopulationofBasquesoutsideoftheBasquecountrythaninit.Theseparationtheyexperiencefromtheirhomelandisbothphysicalandpsychological,sobeingpartofagroupwiththesameinterestsisanimportantsocialsupportsystem.TheseorganizationscontributetothecontinuationofBasqueculture,language,andcommunity,andencouragefuturegenerationstolearnabouttheirethnicheritage.Oneofthewaysthroughwhichtheyachievethisisdance.

WhilelearningandperformingBasquedances,theyconnecttotheirheritage,experienceapartoftheirhomeland,preserveBasqueculture,andcreateconnectionsandfriendshipsthatlastalifetime.

CalifornianValerieArrecheabeganteachingalongsideherfatherattheageofthirteenandonherownatsixteen.Forher,danceisherpreferredexpressionofheritage;itprovidesawaytobeproudofherBasqueheritage.

ThedanceperformancesofNorthAmericanBasqueorganizationshavedevelopedtheinterestofnon-BasqueAmericansaswell.JanetIribarnefromtheBasqueDancersexplainedthattheirorganizationisopentoanyone,andafterseeinghergroupperform,severalofhernon-BasquefriendshavedevelopedtheirownloveofBasquetraditionsaswell.

ScientistsbehindtheUniversityofAdelaidestudy,whichwaspublishedintheJournalofBiogeographyonThursday,collected51newthylacineDNAsamplesfromfossilbonesandmuseumskins—thelargestdatasetofthylacineDNAtodate.Thepaperconcludedthatclimatechangestartingabout4,000yearsago—inparticulardrierseasonscausedbytheweathersystemsknownasElNino-SouthernOscillation—waslikelythemaincauseofthemainlandextinction.

TheancientDNAshowedthatthemainlandextinctionofthylacineswasrapid,andnottheresultoflossofgeneticdiversity.TherewasalsoevidenceofapopulationcrashinthylacinesinTasmaniaatthesameperiodoftime,reducingtheirnumbersandgeneticdiversity.

AssociateProfessorJeremyAustin,deputydirectoroftheUniversity’sAustralianCentreforAncientDNA,saidTasmaniawouldhavebeenprotectedfrommainlandAustralia’swarmer,drierclimateduetoitshigherrainfall.Hearguedthatclimatechangewas“theonlythingthatcouldhavecaused,oratleaststarted,anextinctiononthemainlandandcausedapopulationcrashinTasmania.”
